It is always a privilege when our clients trust us with their pride and joy, which is why it gives us an even greater kick to have them come back with their latest rig or an upgrade to another vehicle. That's exactly what happened after Ron came to us for a Lithium System upgrade to his Bushtracker caravan.
Some time back, Ron's caravan arrived at our workshop with three 130W and one 150W solar panels run through a 30A solar controller, four 120Ah AGM batteries, totalling a hefty 146kg, which were situated in separate compartments, and a 50A 240V charger which had rattled to bits mounted under an 1800W Inverter stacked on top of it
And, with no DC charger in the mix and just a direct battery link, there was inadequate vehicle charging and numerous hazards associated with linking batteries of different chemistries.
Starting anew, we installed an RV Lithium Systems (RVLSA) 600Ah LiFePO4 lithium battery with 500A continuous/3000A surge Battery Management System (BMS) mounted in a custom sealed enclosure which we vented to the outside of the van, inline with the new AN/NZS 3001.2.2022 Australian standards.
Our batteries represent significant savings in weight and in this instance, Ron enjoyed 91kgs off the original AGM's!
We built a Victron Smart Bluetooth BMV712 battery monitor into the battery which can be read from any smart device, and installed a Victron Multiplus 3000VA inverter with an integrated 120Ah 240V Smart Bluetooth charger.
To safely charge from the vehicle when driving, in went a Victron Smart Bluetooth 50A ORION XS Vehicle DC Charger, and we replaced the old solar array with four 185W Victron solar panels controlled by a 50A Victron SmartSolar Bluetooth MPPT Solar Controller, and two 100W Slimline Solar Panels and 90W Victron solar panel, linked to a 20A Victron SmartSolar Bluetooth MPPT Solar Controller.
Among the many powerful features of Victron products is their ability to be connected for Synchronize Charging.
Synchronized charging enables several compatible Victron chargers to function together as a single large charger, aligning charge algorithms and switching charge states all at the same time.
To make it simple to view the system and its performance, we mounted an 8” Smart Tablet in an overhead cabinet.
Then Ron came back late last year to give his new F150 the RVLSA/Install A Gadget treatment.
To power a fridge in the rear tray of the Effy and while waiting for the canopy build, we built and installed the ever popular The Lithium Box (TLB) 100/40 Small which is capable of running two mid-sized fridges and is the most compact model in the portable 'The Lithium Box' Range. For towing the van, we added in a 50A Anderson Plug Vehicle Charge Circuit to the rear to charge the Bushtracker batteries whilst on the go, and a 7” Clip Over Rear View Mirror Monitor with spiral cable and socket (Wozza Cable) also to the rear. We removed the existing camera wiring out of the 12 pin trailer socket, rewired and installed a wozza socket on the caravan to connect the camera system.
With the tow rig ready and a fresh new off grid power system in the van, Ron's all set for new adventures!
