Keeping It Cool

One of the most important appliances to have reliably powered when hitting the road (or off), is the fridge, especially when heading north to warmer climes as so many West Aussie's do over Perth's winter.

This handsome 2024 Chev Z71 Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty with an RSI canopy is John's new toy and tow vehicle, and needed power to run a 75L Dometic chest fridge, positioned in the vehicle tray.

The most popular, compact and economical model of The Lithium Box (TLB) is TLB100-40SM, which is capable of running two mid-sized fridges, and was the perfect solution mounted beside draws in the tray.  The Lithium Box holds it's voltage very high and stable, coping with large loads easily, so appliances work more efficiently and there's less wear and tear on electronic components, which is perfect for fridges.

Our TLB's come with Redarc's BCDC 1240 Vehicle and Solar Charger, so we ran a Blue Anderson Plug Charge Lead for vehicle charging to TLB, and wired up a fridge connection from TLB's rear Anderson plug, to the fridge slide.  They also feature a 50A Yellow Anderson Plug Input for solar.

When on an adventure, the Silverado is towing a 2008 Boroma 22' Caravan, so we also installed one grey and one blue 50A Anderson plug to the rear tow hitch, so the caravan's battery and Dometic 225 litre three way fridge could receive power from the vehicle whilst driving. These Anderson Plug connections are switched with the ignition key so there's no chance of flattening the vehicle battery when parked up.

The caravan's three way fridge pulls 24A and over time, this usually damages a 12 pin plug connection between the van and vehicle. Best practice is to use an Anderson plug connection as we have an the vehicle, so we replaced the 12 pin setup with the Anderson and also swapped a non-genuine Anderson plug connection for DC/vehicle charging to the van with a genuine 50A. Any external Anderson Plugs we install are always protected from dust and dirt with boots and covers.
